Abstract

The article discusses the vulnerability of women and girls in temporary shelters after extreme weather events, focusing on the violence they suffer. Factors such as lack of security, privacy, and inadequate staff training increase the risk of abuse. To combat this reality, the article proposes measures such as strengthening security, guaranteeing privacy, providing specialized training for staff, establishing strict protocols for reporting abuse, supporting victims, and fighting impunity. The article highlights the need for further research on the topic, especially in Brazil, to improve protection protocols. It also suggests integrating public policies into disaster response plans and amending the Victim Statute to include the term "climate crisis" and gender characterization, in order to provide more targeted protection for women and girls who are victims of violence in temporary shelters.
