Context: Parenting styles represent a central dimension in the area of parenting, so it is essential to adapt instruments to the Portuguese population that allow us to acess parenting practices that promote antisocial and prosocial behaviors.
Objective: This study sought to translate and adapt the Parenting Styles Inventory (Gomide, 2006, 2021) for the Portuguese population, also presenting its psychometric qualities and exploring some differential data.
Method: The process that gave rise to the data collection was random probability sampling. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 307 participants, 258 (84%) of whom were female and 48 (15.6%) male, with a mean age of 39.20 (SD=10.43).
Results: The results of the adaptation of the Inventory showed an exploratory factorial structure explaining 56.69% of the variance. In the confirmatory factor analysis, a structure similar to the original instrument was obtained, consisting of two dimensions (positive practices and negative practices) and seven sub-dimensions (positive supervision, moral behavior, neglect, inconsistent punishment, relaxed discipline, negative supervision, and physical abuse). In general, the adjustment indices revealed a good fit of the model to the data. The convergent and discriminant validity and reliability values were also adequate. Differential results were obtained as a result of sociodemographic variables.
Conclusion: The results suggest that the Parenting Styles Inventory (IEP) is adequate for the Portuguese population and highlight the need for programs to promote healthy parenting.
